Fire and Sword in the Sudan
by: Rudolph Slatin
This is the astonishing tale of Slatin Pasha (1857 - 1932), the Austrian soldier of fortune. Born near Vienna, the young Slatin had already fought in Bosnia when he was offered a high-ranking military post in the Sudan. This desert kingdom was ruled on behalf of the nearby Egyptian government by General Charles Gordon, the brilliant British soldier turned administrator. With a slim hold on power, Gordon was in need of strong, brave, linguistically talented, young men like Rudolf Slatin. If Slatin was looking for adventure as he rode his camel into Sudan's Darfur province in 1881 he got it in spades when one of the most spectacular wars of the 19th century broke out.

Six months on, South Sudan struggles
It has been almost exactly a year since 99 per cent of people in southern Sudan voted in favour of breaking away from the north and forming their own country. South Sudan was declared the world's newest country on July 9 last year 2011, but six months later, it is still struggling to recover from years of conflict. Al Jazeera's Haru Mutasa reports from Juba, the capital of South Sudan.

Sudan expels Kenyan ambassador
www.ntv.co.ke The ambassadors of Kenya and Sudan in Nairobi and Khartoum are preparing to leave their respective stations, as a row over a court ruling threatens diplomatic relations between the two nations. On Tuesday, Sudan expelled Kenya's ambassador and recalled its own in Nairobi, in protest against a Nairobi high court ruling ordering the arrest of President Omar El-Bashir if he were to visit Kenya. Kenya says it will appeal against the ruling but as NTVs Brenda Wanga reports, which may not be enough to pacify a very angry Khartoum government.
Sudan farmers fear 'foreign land grabs'
When South Sudan became an independent state in July 2011, northern Sudan lost most of its oil fields to its new neighbouring country. In an effort to revive the country's struggling economy, the Sudanese government based in Khartoum has been selling or leasing vast swaths of fertile land to foreign investors. But in areas where agricultural land is the basic source of living for people, there is much anger over what farmers say is a government policy that promotes foreign land grabs, favouritism, and exploitation. Al Jazeera's Mohamed Vall reports from al-Shamanlya, Sudan.
